Institutional strategy & transformation
Turn external pressure and internal complexity into a coherent direction, an executable sequence, and durable institutional capacity.
Higher Education Strategy & Advisory
Change alone isn't progress. Institutions need clarity, capacity and belief to truly transform.
Direction
inspires velocityThe premise
Higher education is being radically reshaped in real time. Institutions must resist the instinct to retreat from this friction or react impulsively to every new pressure. The real work is to lean into the complexity of this moment and boldly strike a path toward what the institution must become tomorrow.
Advisory
Deliberate Momentum works at the intersection of academic purpose, institutional operations, and change leadership—where strategy either becomes real or quietly disappears.
Turn external pressure and internal complexity into a coherent direction, an executable sequence, and durable institutional capacity.
Design programs, pacing, learning experiences, and delivery models around the realities of today’s students and the purpose of the institution.
Lead LMS, SIS, AI, and institution-wide technology decisions as organizational change—not merely software implementation.
Connect academic quality, student feasibility, institutional operations, and financial sustainability instead of treating them as separate agendas.
Create space for candid analysis, decision-making, and momentum when the stakes are high and the path is not obvious.
How DM engagements work
Institutions do not arrive at change with the same needs, urgency, or internal capacity. The work is therefore shaped to the moment: focused enough to produce clarity, and sustained enough to make progress real.
Three scales of momentum
Hover, focus or tap to exploreSelect a scope to see how the engagement expands in reach, participation, and institutional capacity.
Short, intensive engagements bring an external executive lens to a defined moment through environmental and institutional scans, decision analysis, risk and opportunity assessment, and actionable recommendations.
Time-bound collaborative work helps leaders and institutional groups convert ambition into priorities, academic or operating architecture, decision frameworks, and a practical path to implementation.
Longer partnerships accompany an institution through change—guiding shared learning, strengthening leadership and decision-making, and building the internal capacity to carry the work forward long after the engagement ends.
The solution for your organization begins simply- a candid conversation about the need, the context, the urgency, and what meaningful progress must look like.

Essays on technology and AI, changing students, leadership, institutional culture, regulation, mission, and the difficult work of meaningful adaptation.
Technology & institutional change
"Simple" Technology Change solves little yet reveals much. Institutions must lean into "Good Friction" and choose the harder path if they hope to become something greater.
Academic innovation
For too long, institutions have defaulted into modality rather than choosing it with intention. That can no longer stand. We must demand the best from each modality while confronting its limitations honestly—and design accordingly.
Leadership
Institutions, like nations, are shaped by cycles of adoption and rejection. Leaders who understand the arc of political, cultural, and technological change can distinguish passing swings from lasting shifts—and chart a clearer path forward.
AI & liberal education
As AI reproduces capabilities once understood as distinctly human, the boundary between human subject and technological object is beginning to blur. Where does that leave us now—and what might it mean for tomorrow?
Institutional sustainability
Every institution, regardless of size, must accomplish more with fewer resources. Sustainability requires moving beyond iterative change toward fundamental redesign: what must change, who must lead it, when must it begin, and how can it become real?
Institutional data strategy
Data may consist of simple numbers, but institutional data is anything but simple. Different units often use different definitions for the same concept, the same terms for different things, and competing numbers for a single “fact.” Resolving those inconsistencies is difficult—but essential if an institution is to align decisions, speak a common language, and move in the same direction.
Reader's choice
Several essays are already taking shape. Which one should move to the top of the list—or what question have I missed?
“Solving for one change is insufficient; predicting them all is fiction. The work is to become an institution that deftly navigates change, guided by deep purpose.”

About Colin
Colin has spent more than two decades leading colleges and universities through moments when academic mission, organizational culture, and business necessity collide.
His work spans presidential and provost leadership, academic strategy, program development, enrollment and student success, accreditation, organizational redesign, and institution-wide change.
He has led the development of programs and entire schools across disciplines and at every level, from undergraduate through graduate education. He has also led nine LMS implementations, three SIS transitions, and numerous complex technology and operating-model changes—always with the conviction that implementation is ultimately about people, trust, and institutional capacity.
